Whenever properly cared and carefully handled your meerschaum pipe will last for decades.  Otherwise you will find that it does chip, crack and break easily.  Oils and dirt from your fingers may also cause discoloration.  Once you are done smoking your pipe will be warm and soft.  At this time it will also be more susceptible to damage so make sure to clean it with a warm rag on the outside and some time of a cleaner for pipes on the inside.
